Construction of the Derwent hydropower scheme began in 1934 and the last power station was commissioned in 1968. There are two sections in the Derwent hydropower scheme – the upper and lower. This is because of the difference in how the water is stored in the sections. Visually the scheme resembles a Y shape. The upper section of the scheme uses larger, deeper lakes for water storage than the lower section. The four main power stations in the upper section release water when it is needed to generate electricity. The upper section is formed from the Nive River system in the east and the Derwent River system in the west, making up the top of the Y. The lower section is called run-of-river, which means water flows to power stations directly from a river, and cascades through a series of power stations. This means the same water is used to generate energy multiple times. There are six power stations in the lower section and they use water from the Derwent River multiple times. The lower section forms the ‘tail’ of the Y.

The combination of Lake Gordon and Lake Pedder is both the largest water storage in our system and the largest in Australia. This catchment is in southwest Tasmania. The water in Lake Pedder provides around 40% of the water used in the Gordon Power Station. The water flows from Lake Pedder into Lake Gordon through McPartlan Pass Canal.Lake Pedder was originally flooded as part of the Gordon power scheme. There was widespread opposition to this action from conservation groups at the time. In 1995 a Federal parliamentary inquiry investigated the feasibility of restoring the original Lake Pedder.

Pacific Hydro recognised the powerful flows of water released for irrigation purposes from the Southern Hemisphere’s largest irrigation channel, the Mulwala Canal, as an untapped source of hydro power.
As Australia’s first hydroelectric scheme built on an irrigation channel, the project is now generating clean, renewable energy without affecting the water flow to the 2,600 farms the canal supplies.
Once approval had been gained from the local authorities and community, the 2.5MW Drop hydro power plant was constructed on the site and began generating power in 2002. Operations at The Drop abate around 8,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions every year. Supported by grants from the Australian Greenhouse Office and the New South Wales Sustainable Energy Development Authority, the successful development of this project in a short time frame resulted from the cooperation of a number of organisations, including Murray Irrigation, which is responsible for the water supply.

Using electricity from the grid, Wivenhoe Power Station pumps water uphill from Wivenhoe Dam, into Splityard Creek Dam.The water is stored at Splityard Creek Dam until it is required for electricity generation, at which time the
water is released back downhill to the turbines at the power station to generate electricity. The water then flows back into Wivenhoe Dam, where it can be pumped back uphill to Splityard Creek Dam to generate more electricity. In this way, Wivenhoe Power Station works like a giant rechargeable battery.
